Topic:   Special: African Nations Cup 2004 > GROUP A

Lomami's departure stirs underdog romantics.

After all the three Africa Cup debutants received opening game baptism in Tunisia, we finally have an underdog at this year's tournament after Rwanda slashed and burnt their way to a dramatic 1-1 against Guinea yesterday.

The draw was all thanks to the 73rd minute departure of Power Dynamos striker John Lomami.

Lomami did not at all do his dream of moving on beyond Zambia any good after starting against Guinea and he seemed content with showing his dreadlocks on TV as if making the starting 11 was enough.

It seems after two months of touring with Rwanda from Sudan, France, Egypt and finally on to Tunisia, Lomami has not snapped out of his characteristic bout of poor form that we who watch him week in week out have grown to tolerate.

Rwanda coach Ratomir Dujkovic however, does not have that kind of luxurious patience in only three unforgiving group games.

Lomami made way for compatriot Karim Kamanzi of Vise in Belgium, who came on to full effect to slam in equalizer that gave Rwanda the lifeline on the rebound from free-kick through a speculative drive through a human wall.

Kamanzi's goal came after Guinea's Titi Camara rolled back the years with a fine early second period opener.

The Rwanda midfielders goal meant his nation became the first of the debutants at this finals to collect a point after Benin and Zimbabwe both fell to South Africa and Egypt 2-0 and 2-1 respectively in their opening group ties.

That draw against Guinea has surely set football romantics dreams swirling after our underdog hopes emerging from Tunisia were looking quite bleak.

Rwanda third and final Group A tie will be against their troubled western giant of a neighbor Congo DR in the big Great Lakes derby on Sunday.

Congo DR, from whom much was expected this year, are having a chaotic outing and went into self-distract mode later Wednesday night losing 3-0 to Tunisia.

Apart from the big score line, the major highlight saw captain Lomana Lua Lua see red in the 38th minute as tempers flared leading to a five minute delay.

Both player and country are now certainly out of this year’s tournament with their showdown against Rwanda a mare formality.

Rwanda on the other hand is in with some hope where there was forlorn despair despite playing the most awful football at this year’s tournament.

But their opponents are wary about one secret stinging weapon in The Wasps chinking and brittle Armour.

Rwanda have scored both their goals from set-pieces and that alone should do to send opponents quaking in their boots once they find themselves in a critical set piece situation.

It might be too much to ask but should Rwanda by a far chance manage to put three past poor Congo DR without reply and Guinea lose Tunisia, Kigali is in for the mother of all feasts.
