Pubs lose 50 cents as Zambian's stay home to watch Africa Cup.
Football mad Zambia will catch Africa Cup fever tomorrow after national broadcaster ZNBC announced Friday afternoon that they would screen live all the 2004 Tunisia final matches.
ZNBC radio and TV quoting their spokesman Mwansa Kapeya confirmed the last-minute news saving Zambia from missing the first live TV broadcast of an Africa Cup since 1988.
The good news comes after five days of sheer suspense by ZNBC who were struggling to raise US$200,000.00 for the TV rights to pay wholesaler LC2 International to beam the tournament live.
Already, bars and restaurants across the land were preparing to cash in on the near-miss with adverts in the press and on billboards in towns charging at least K2500.00 (50 cents) to watch the tournament.
Saturday’s kick-off will be a special one for the City of Kitwe whose adopted son John Lomami will take to the field with Rwanda who will be making the Africa Cup debut.
The Power Dynamos and Rwanda striker will with his national team kick-off the tournament against hosts Tunisia Group A tie.
